MENGO — Drama unfolded at the weekend when a federo workshop organised by Buganda clan heads in Lubiri turned rowdy. Thousands of the charged federo agitators who attended the workshop turned their guns on former Buganda Katikkiro, Joash Mayanja Nkangi, and Wakiso district chairman, Mr Ian Kyeyune. They chased the two from Lubiri, accusing them of being anti-federo and not fit to attend such a function.

The violence started shortly after Kabaka Ronald Mutebi’s speech. The crowd was angered by Nkangi’s refusal to discuss federo when he was called to speak.

Nkangi said he was not prepared to discuss federo since he was not informed in advance. This irked the crowd. “Surely am not prepared to discuss this topic since I was not informed earlier,” Nkangi said.

The crowd started shouting, “‘aveeyo’ let him leave, we are tired of President Museveni’s spies here, those are the people who betray the Kabaka...” the crowd shouted.

“What preparation does he need. He is a Muganda and was once a Katikkiro. He knows every thing. That is a cover-up” they added. In a flash, Nkangi was whisked off the platform by Police and Kabaka’s Bambowa (guards) who escorted him to his vehicle and took off amidst abuses and his vehicle being pelted by stones.

Kyeyune, known to be anti federo but pro-third term, was also forced to leave. They pelted him with stones, empty mineral water bottles and pieces of wood as he was rushing to enter his car. Kyeyune tried to defend Nkangi in vain. The confusion started in the afternoon after Mutebi’s address.
