Uganda: Regional, International Communities Not Supportive

The cross-border advocacy representing northern Uganda has accused the regional and 
international communities of failing to give enough attention on the crisis in the 
region, which has been described as a humanitarian crisis.

The advocacy group, which has deliberated key issues for peace, have also lamented 
concern on the loss of civilian lives and the absence of coherent national and 
international strategy for peaceful resolution.

"The regional and the international diplomatic response has been intermittent, 
uncoordinated and insufficient to a large extent," said a joint statement on the 
conflict of northern Uganda availed to CISA.

The group, who were attending a workshop in Acholi Inn, Gulu in northern Uganda (July 
20-23, 2004), urged the Ugandan government to implement the strategy of dialogue and 
amnesty used in the West Nile region to end the conflict in the region.

"We call the attention of the Government of Uganda to the strategy of dialogue and 
amnesty & to be applied in ending the current conflict," they said.

Neighbouring countries have also been urged to sustain pressure on the Sudanese 
government to urgently cease all support to the Lords Resistance Army (LRA), so as to 
open avenues for peaceful resolution.
