The Power of the Pill
Challenges of ARV Medicines in East Africa

 Betty Kyaddondo
Stefan Hanson and Lisa Richey

Chair: Catrine Christiansen, the Nordic Africa Institute
Globalization has brought technological access to the forefront of political debates
over global inequality. In high-income countries, antiretroviral treatment has become
widely available, yet few of the 26.6 million people with HIV/AIDS in Africa are
benefiting from antiretroviral drugs. Today, efforts to scale up Anti-Retro-Viral
(ARV) medicine distribution in poor countries are proliferating. Yet as ARVs become
more widely available, new issues arise. How can equitable access be ensured? Will the
focus on treatment undermine prevention? What broader care and support do people on
ARVs need? What will the influx of resources for ARV treatment mean for public health
services? This seminar brings together researchers and practitioners from Uganda,
Sweden, and Denmark to discuss the questions related to access and in/exclusion in
light of the current HIV/AIDS situation in Uganda and Tanzania.
