Crowds overwhelm Kabaka

JUST FOR YOU: Haji Nasser Sebaggala prepares to prostrate himself before Kabaka Ronald Mutebi on Friday

By Henry Mukasa
A HUGE crowd that thronged Butambala county headquarters to attend Buganda Kingdom's community service day on Friday overwhelmed the Kabaka, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.
Thrilled crowds surged forward to catch a glimpse of their king but were kept at bay by the tight security detail around the monarch. They braved the scorching sun and pushed and pulled to get near him as they called out his name in excitement.
A jovial Mutebi said the mammoth gathering was a sign of loyalty and display of solidarity by his subjects during the challenging period Buganda was undergoing.
"Your coming in big numbers has shown your love for us and the kingdom," Mutebi said to deafening applause.
Talks between Buganda and the government over the former's demand for a federal status collapsed because of a disagreement on the composition of the Lukiiko.
The Kabaka arrived in Butambala at 2:50pm and disembarked at Lukalu, the Mawokota-Butambala boundary.
He walked for a while, greeting the people. "Kabaka ng'anyirira (The king looks good)," schoolchildren shouted.
The Kabaka then proceeded to Kikunyu where he opened a health centre built by residents through self-help, attended the baptism of two babies and planted a memorial mango tree. He arrived at the saza headquarters, where he spent a night, at 4:45pm.
The Kabaka said the day's theme; "Promotion of Health, Defending Culture, Promotion of Cooperatives for Development, was spot-on. "We have to work extra hard to fight ignorance and poverty so that we can be self-sustaining. Our problem now is being dependant on other people's work," Mutebi said.
He said the culture of Buganda's forefathers was embedded in hard work.
He said Buganda had medieval villages with specialised jobs like art and craft and barkcloth and drum-making that earned residents income.
