COURT - Ms Jane Nalukwago, the wife to the Director of Information at the Movement Secretariat, Mr Ofwono Opondo, was yesterday sent to Luzira prison for failing to pay a Shs 896,050 debt.
Mengo Magistrates Court committed Nalukwago to civil prison for six months, shortly after court bailiffs from Watts Auctioneers arrested her from Little Angels Nursery in Nakasero.

She had just dropped her children at the school at 7.30am.
The Grade One Magistrate, Mr Boniface Wamala, had issued an arrest warrant against her.
Nalukwago works with Bank of Baroda in Kampala.
She secured a Shs3 million loan from Uganda Micro Finance Union in May 2002, but failed to complete the payment.

After court committed her to the civil prison, she was rushed to Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court in the city centre to board a waiting Prisons bus to Luzira.
Relatives raised Shs300,000, but it was not enough to save her from jail.
They pleaded with the creditors counsel, Mr Arthur Mukwatanise, but he refused to bulge.

One of the relatives sobbed after the lawyer received the Shs 300,000, but asked them to go and look for the balance before he could set Nalukwago free.
Mukwatanise said Opondo switched off his mobile telephone when they tried to contact him over the matter.

He (Opondo) has however, communicated to me and promised to secure the balance, Mukwatanise later told The Monitor.
It was okay for his wife to spend a night in prison, Mukwatanise said.
