No third term, say northern advocates

By Chris Ochowun

LAWYERS from northern Uganda and the Uganda Law Society (ULS) have rejected the white paper proposal to lift presidential term limits.

They said, during a workshop at Acholi Inn in Gulu town on Saturday, that the government should concentrate on amendments that will effect a smooth political transition and suspend the debate on other proposed amendments, to the 8th parliament.

The lawyers said issues like lifting of the presidential term limits and federalism should be handled by the next parliament, which will have ample time to study them in depth and make wide consultations before taking final decisions.

They said if Museveni still wanted to be President, he could stand again in 2011.
