Vote buying okay - LC5 officials

ARUA - Two councillors on the district executive council shocked participants at an anti-corruption workshop on Thursday when they said electoral fraud is justified.
The District Education Secretary, Mr Cyril Eriku, said electoral bribes prove a person�s economic strength.
�If you have to stand as a leader, you should have money and there is no problem if one buys things for voters to win their support,� Eriku said.
He was supported by the Secretary for Production, Mr Alimani Azima, who said critics of the use of money in elections to influence voters are wrong.
The duo were responding to submissions by the North-western Regional Inspector of Government, Mr Polly Muhairwe, on �Political Corruption in West Nile; an Agenda for Action,� in whi ch he condemned commercialisation of elections.
He said a leader should win voters� support on merit rather than on monetary strength.
The workshop was organised by the Anti-Corruption Coalition in Koboko to mark the recently ended anti-corruption week.
