Museveni orders brotherâs arrest By Grace Matsiko Nov 11, 2004 KAMPALA - A stepbrother to President Yoweri Museveni has been arrested for questioning over the murder of a Presidential Guard Brigade intelligence officer. Mr Geoffrey Ayine alias Sodo, was picked on Monday by security personnel from his father Mzee Amos Kagutaâs home in Rwakitura, Nyabushozi, a State House source told The Monitor yesterday. Kagutaâs house is separated by a perimeter wall from Museveniâs residence. Unidentified gunmen shot and killed Lt. Arthur Akoragye, the head of intelligence in the PGB. He was based at the Presidentâs upcountry home in Rwakitura. Akoragye was escorting his expectant wife to Mbarara Hospital to deliver when the gunmen pulled him out of a taxi and shot him at close range. The source said the suspect Ayine was taken into custody for questioning at State House in Entebbe. The Presidentâs stepbrother recorded a statement at Rushere Police Post in Naybushozi before he was transferred to Entebbe. âThese are investigations. I canât be an obstacle to investigations. Even if he is my brother or any relative close to me, arrest him or her,â the State House source quoted the President as directing the PGB Commandant, Lt. Col. Leo Kyanda, on telephone before Ayine was arrested. The PGB spokesman, Lt. Edison Kwesiga, declined to comment on the matter. But State House sources said Ayine was among several people and PGB soldiers who had been interrogated or arrested after Akoragyeâs killing. âWe are yet to get the killers, but every information is being treated with utmost care. âSome of the people under custody may be witnesses or have vital information to help the ongoing inquiries,â the source said. The officer said the investigators were also looking into family or land wrangles to establish any clue on the possible motive of the murder. Sources in PGB said Ayine and Akoragye had long been friends before the deceased joined PGB. Â 2004 The Monitor Publications |
