The Uganda Peoples Defence Force (UPDF) has deployed a large number of heavilr armed troops into the Rwenzori mountains near the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The deployment follows growing fears that the People's Redemption Army (PRA) rebels, believed to be led by Col Samson Mande and operating in the vast forests in eastern DR Congo, could be planning to attack the country from Kasese and Bundibugyo districts borders.

The deployment of troops into the Rwenzori mountains started about two weeks ago.

The Monitor saw several trucks carrying heavily armed soldiers in Kyenjojo town, heading to Fort Portal in transit to Bundibugyo.

The Spokesman of the UPDF 2nd Division in Mbarara, Lt. Chris Magezi, confirmed that they had deployed more soldiers in the Rwenzori region, but denied it was at the border with DR Congo.

"Our borders are always secure and guarded tightly. Those increased numbers of solidiers are normal army routine activities like re-training," he said by telephone from Mbarara.

He did not say whether the new deployment was related to recent reports that the People's Redemption Army rebels could attack Uganda from their eastern DRC bases.
