Description:

This volume brings together for the first time a series of studies on the social history of venereal disease in modern Europe and its former colonies. It explores, from a comparative perspective, the responses of legal, medical and political authorities to the 'Great Scourge'. In particular, how such responses reflected and shaped social attitudes towards sexuality and social relationships of class, gender, generation and race.

Chapter on Uganda by William W Tuck:

Venereal Disease, Sexuality and Society in Uganda. (pp 191 - 204).

(FYI: Mulago Hospital came into existence to fight the scourge of venereal diseases).

Another book that references Uganda quite a bit is:

Africa Since Independence : A Comparative History

by Paul Nugent,  Publisher: Palgrave Macmillan (September 18, 2004),ISBN: 0333682734

Hardcover: $75

Paperback:  $25

Description of this 624 book:

This is a genuinely comparative study of the different trajectories and experiences of independent African states. It addresses the differential legacies of British, French, Portuguese, Belgian and Spanish colonialism as well as the unique qualities of imperial Ethiopia and Liberia. Paul Nugent analyses boundary problems, the reshaping of territorial structures and the contrasting ideological paths followed by civilian and military regimes. The book ends with a look at the interplay between structural adjustment, ethnicity, democratization and the impact of NGOs. A state-level perspective is b alanced by a sensitivity to popular culture.

Ps:

Now what we need is a brief treatise on the NGOization of the Uganda economy and how the government of Uganda has abandoned the delivery of essential services to NGOs, etc, don’t you think?  Actually, I think it’d be an excellent thesis or dissertation topic in political science, economics, history, public administration, etc.
