Eight people were killed in cattle rustling incidents on the Kenya-Uganda border at the weekend.

Among those killed in an incident at Kapchorwa, Uganda, on Saturday, were seven suspected cattle rustlers.

They were part of a group of unknown number of people who stole 200 cattle in Kapchorwa, about 100 kilometeres from the Kenya border.

The rustlers were believed to have been killed by the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF).

Trans Nzoia district commissioner Christopher Musumbu said that security officers were pursuing the raiders said to have escaped towards Kasei in Kacheliba constituency.

In another incident, suspected UPDF and Local Defence Unit of Uganda on Friday shot dead a herdsman at a village on the Kenya-Uganda border. Five other herdsmen were seriously injured.

The Ugandan security forces allegedly hurled several grenades at the herdsmen who had taken their animals to drink water at river Kingwal.

The incident occurred near Katikamor village on the border of Trans Nzoia and West Pokot districts.

Area chief Stephen Kassa identified the dead man as Mr Thomas Kapnandi.

West Pokot district commissioner Stephen Ikua and Kapenguria police boss David Kerina confirmed the killing, adding that the Government had increased security personnel on the border.

The incident occurred shortly after 2pm as Kapenguria MP Samuel Moroto was addressing his constituents at Kanyarkwat village, seven kilometers from the scene.
