Latest information emerging from the Saturday meeting between the late first Vice President of Sudan, Dr John Garang and President Yoweri Museveni indicate that the two were among other issues discussing ways of ending the 19-year long LRA war.

Garang died on Saturday after a Ugandan presidential helicopter he was traveling in crashed in Southern Sudan. He died with 12 other people including seven Ugandan crewmembers.

In meetings at Rwakitura on Friday and Saturday, Garang met the President and foreign envoys accredited to Uganda including Mr Francois Gordon (Britain), Ms Yoka Brandt (Netherlands), Mr Jimmy Kolker (US) and Mr Stig Barlyng (Denmark).

"Lt. Gen. Garang met with President Museveni and the envoys to end the LRA war. We cannot have peace in northern Uganda and Southern Sudan while the LRA is still actively killing people. As Sudan Peoples Liberation Army (SPLA), we are committed to wipe out the LRA because they have displaced many people," a top commander of SPLA vowed.

The meeting in Rwakitura also explored ways of rebuilding Southern Sudan and resettling millions of displaced Sudanese. Brig. David Manyok told mourners at Mr James Wani Yiga's home (an SPLA Commander) in Rubaga near Kampala on Tuesday evening.

This was during funeral prayers for the fallen SPLA founder and leader. Over 300 Sudanese nationals attended it. Rubaga is home to hundreds of Sudanese displaced by the war in southern Sudan.

The prayers were led by Rt. Rev. Michael Sokiri Lugor, Bishop of Rejaf Diocese and assisted by Bishop Alapayo Manyang of Rumbek Diocese, Rev. Levi Hassan and Rev. John Tombi all from Southern Sudan.

A statement from State House after Garang's death only stated that the former rebel leader had been a guest of the President from Friday July 29 until Saturday 30 when he returned home.

Manyoke urged SPLM member to remain united and continue with the struggle for lasting peace in Southern Sudan.

"John Garang has bought the land of Southern Sudan with his own blood. We need to carry the courage and be united. If we are divided, it would be the end of our struggle," he said.

He reported that the Sudan People's Liberation Movement leadership met and chose Commander Salvo Kiir to replace the fallen leader.

Garang's successor in the SPLM/A will also automatically take over as Sudan's first Vice President, in accordance with the January peace deal. Garang and his SPLM/A rebel movement have been close allies of Uganda. He had made countless visits to Uganda over the years.
