Mengo denies rift over tier govt

Katikkiro of Buganda, Joseph Ssemwogerere

THE Katikkiro of Buganda, Joseph Ssemwogerere (left), has said there is no rift between the Mengo leadership and the central government over the recently passed Constitutional Amend-ment Bill on Regional Tier, reports Milton Olupot.

Ssemwogerere in a statement yesterday said, “What Parliament passed on the Regional Tier is the true reflection of the position reached between both Mengo’s and the Central government negotiating teams.”

He also denied press reports that the passing of the Bill had caused a rift between the leadership at Mengo and the Clan Leaders. “It is not true that such a rift exists at all,” he said.

The media recently reported that the chiefs and clan leaders had disagreed over the provisions of the Bill seeking to establish regional governments.

Buganda clan heads (Abataka) were quoted as saying the Bill departed from the agreement reached with President Yoweri Museveni in a meeting on May 20.

Ssemwogerere said at the conclusion of the talks, he made a presentation to the Lukiiko, during which he urged ways of improving on the position to go ahead.

“It is in that spirit that the Abataka had a meeting with the President on May 20,” he said.
