Museveni assures NRM MPs of jobs

WORK AND PLEASURE: Wakiso Woman MP Rosemary Sseninde, Kahinda Otafiire and Bebe Cool dance at the dinner

By Apollo Mubiru and Mariam Nalunkuuma
PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni on Wednesday night hosted National Resistance Movement (NRM) MPs to a dinner at State House Nakasero and assured them of jobs even if they lost the 2006 elections.
“My father’s house is big and there are a number of places to stay in, says the bible. This is the same case with the Movement government. There are a number of places to stay in. You should not get worried. There are enough jobs for you even if you lose elections,” Museveni said, borrowing Jesus’ assuarances to his followers about their places in heaven.
A source that attended the dinner, which went up to 2:00am, also quoted Museveni saying, “You must be politically strong on the ground so that the society is able to recognise your work. I will not simply tell people to vote for you when your impact is not felt on the ground. What matters is the
legitimacy of members and the impact you have created to enable you serve in different capacities as good Movement cadres.”
MPs wanted assurance from Museveni whether some of them would not be sidelined in the primaries when the NRM sits to pick its candidates for the coming elections. Anonymous lists of preferred government candidates have been circulating.
Museveni thanked MPs for a job well done on the constitutional amendment process. He said their support in solving major historical contradictions and promoting democratic and constitutional governance would be remembered.
In a statement yesterday, the State House quoted Museveni saying: “The unity of Movement MPs in turn cemented further the unity of people of Uganda, who were divided by the past political parties and bad leadership. The Movement MPs have taken the right political road at the right time by forging unity.”
Prime Minister Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, who thanked Museveni for guiding both the Movement and the country to a correct political path, yesterday told journalists at Parliament: “I slept at 2:00am because I attended a dinner at State House.”
Speaker Edward Ssekandi and deputy Rebecca Kadaga also attended the dinner. Others were Movement vice-chairman Moses Kigongo and National Political Commissar Crispus Kiyonga.
Museveni cautioned the media against maligning Parliament and the Government and said whatever had been done followed democratic principles stipulated in the Constitution.
Museveni told legislators that he had written to development partners to remind them that much as they extend aid to Africa, the donors should let developing countries have the final decisions on democracy.
Museveni said the Movement had handled numerous issues of democracy, solved the problem of scarcity of essential goods, promoted constitutional rule and revamped education, health and other sectors.
He cited the professionalisation of the army, the progress on the E. African federation and the creation of new districts to take services nearer to the people as the Movement achievements.

``When in the course of human development, existing institutions prove inadequate to the needs of man, when they serve merely to enslave, rob and oppress mankind, the people have the eternal right to rebel against, and overthrow, these institutions.'' — Emma Goldman
