| By Fortunate Ahimbisibwe A senior Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) officer, Major George Niwe Kyepaaka, has been arrested for insubordination and subversion. Niwe was picked on Wednesday from the Senior Staff College, Kimaka in Jinja, where he has been pursuing a senior officers course along with 20 others. He was on Thursday evening transferred to Makindye barracks after being interrogated by intelligence personnel. An intelligence source said yesterday that Niwes arrest was closely linked with his association with some Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) leaders. Niwe hails from Kyamugoranyi near Mbarara district. He was the commander of the 71st battalion before President Yoweri Museveni sent him to Kimaka. He was also a former aide to former Army Commander Gen. James Kazini. He is said to have offered some key information to the FDC camp during the just-concluded presidential elections. The Chief of Military Intelligence, Col. Leopold Kyanda, confirmed the arrest yesterday but declined to divulge details on why the officer had been arrested. He was arrested because of indiscipline. No details, he said. It is not yet clear which charges will be preferred against him in the General Court Martial but a source said he was likely to appear there next week. Niwe reportedly assisted some UPDF officers to flee the country for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Denmark. He was also preparing to leave the country but he was arrested before he could fulfil his plans, a source said. A rmy spokesman Major Felix Kulayigye said investigations were still going on. He is in Makindye barracks pending further investigations. But by the time a senior officer is put under arrest in Makindye, there must be a grave mistake somewhere. The reasons for his arrest were well known to the arresting authority. The best I can say now is that it is true he is under arrest, he said. Niwe was one of the senior officers who took part in Operation Safe Haven in DRC. His arrest follows that of former Internal Security Organisation chief Brig. Henry Tumukunde, arrested last year over criticising the Government. Ends | ||||||
