EMOTIONS were high yesterday at Christ the King Church in Kampala after the family of former intelligence chief Henry Tumukunde sought solace in God over his continued incarceration.
Brig. Tumukunde's family held a church service in his honour at 1:00pm where Msgr. Paul Semwogerere read a sermon from the Book of Isaiah interspersed with emotional overtones.
"When you pass through deep waters, I will be with you; your troubles will not overwhelm you, when you pass through fire, you will not be burnt. The hard trials that come will not hurt you for I am the Lord your God, the holy God of Israel, who saves you," Katende read.
"I will give up Egypt to set you free, I will give up Sudan and Seba, I will give up whole nations to save your life, because you are precious to me and because I love you and give you honour."
Tumukunde, who is facing charges for spreading harmful propaganda, disobedience of lawful orders and neglect of duty in the military General Court Martial (GCM), has been jailed for a year now.
Last year, Tumukunde was hosted on a local radio where he said that when he retires from the army, he would not support the NRM led by President Yoweri Museveni.
Tumukunde claimed that he was blocked from retiring from the army. On May 31, 2005, he was arrested for allegedly making political statements on radio and later charged at the GCM for creating ghost soldiers.
But, on April 20, the GCM acquitted him of causing financial loss of Shs 379 million by inflating the army payroll with 650ghost soldiers, something that was widely read as an indication that his release was imminent.
At the end of the service, Tumukunde's nephew, Bruno Tumwesigye, told Daily Monitor that the family had pegged all its hopes for Tumukunde's release in the hands of God.
"We want justice to take place. We have lost hope with the government but with the intervention of God, all things are possible," Tumwesigye said.
"We want all Ugandans to pray for him. He has been denied bail. Soldiers also have a right to fair justice."
Tumukunde's wife Stella Rubarenzya, a niece to the First Lady Janet Museveni, hastily sneaked away after the prayers. Other close relatives who attended the service included Mr Posia Kakurugu, Ms Joy Kakurugu and Ms Diana Komugisha.
His lawyer, Mr Emmanuel Twarebireho, when asked whether their client was being treated unfairly, he said, "This is a trial being held in camera. I cannot comment unless you and I want to fall in trouble. It is not safe, I will be breaking the law."

Early this week, Tumukunde's trial hit a snag when the GCM Chairman, Gen. Elly Tumwine, failed to turn up for the hearing.
Several attempts to free Tumukunde on bail have borne no results because there is fear that he could flee the country.
On conviction, spreading harmful propaganda carries a maximum death penalty.
