A TEAM of British Army experts, who have served in operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Balkans, yesterday started a training programme with the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces.
According to a press statement from the British High Commission, the move was geared towards strengthening the UPDF's ability to take part in peacekeeping operations.
The statement said, "The assistance is being offered under the UK government's programme to build professionalism in the UPDF."
"The British Army team comprises 12 officers and Senior NCOs drawn from regiments of the British Army, including the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment, Scots and the Household Cavalry Regiment."
In 2001, the UPDF Commander in Chief, President Yoweri Museveni, hinged his presidential campaigns on efforts geared towards the creation of a professional army.
The UPDF Spokesman, Maj. Felix Kulayigye, yesterday confirmed the commencement of the training.
"Yes it [training] has started. It is basically on peacekeeping operations. You are aware we are preparing for Somalia. We are going there very soon," Kulayigye said.

In January, the African Union endorsed attempts by Igad to deploy peacekeepers backed by the United Nations in Somalia.
Last week, Eritrea dispatched a high-ranking government official to meet Museveni over Somalia. However, 48hours later, the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Mr Meles Zenawi, arrived in Uganda and held closed talks with his Igad counterpart, Mr Museveni. At the end of Zenawi's visit, Museveni revealed that the regional countries were now addressing the issue of Somalia.
