A plot has been hatched to assassinate Lang'ata MP Raila Odinga, several MPs
claimed yesterday. The 10 law-makers, mainly from Nyanza Province,
told journalists in Nairobi that the current insecurity and the attack on
Internal Security minister John Michuki's home in Kangema were part of a "wider
plot to eliminate" the ODM- Kenya politician. They said they had
information about two meetings - one in Tororo, Uganda, and the other in Kitale,
both of which discussed the plot and how to handle its
aftermath.
Mr Raila According to the politicians, the recent gun raid on Mr Michuki's
Murang'a home was "stage-managed" by people linked to the killers to show
that even the security minister was not safe. Said Bondo MP
Oburu Oginga, the Lang'ata MP's elder brother: "We want the country to know that
this insecurity is in preparation for something big." Dr Oginga said
their assassination claim was based on intelligence
they had gathered. He was accompanied at the news conference at Parliament Buildings, Nairobi, by MPs Otieno Kajwang' (Mbita), Peter Odoyo (Nyakach), Adhu Awiti (Karachuonyo), Gor Sunguh (Kisumu Town East), Ayiecho Olweny (Muhoroni), Eric Nyamunga (Nyando), Philip Okundi (Rangwe), Owino Likowa (Migori) and William Omondi of Kasarani. The attack on Mr Michuki's home and the killings in parts of the country, Dr Odinga alleged, were part of an elaborate plan to heighten insecurity, which would culminate in the killing of Mr Odinga. The Lang'ata MP is currently on a tour of the US. The plan, he said, included the recent attack on Kisumu Rural MP Peter Anyang' Nyong'o's wife in Nairobi on Sunday. The MPs said Tuesday's killing of four people in Mathare by suspected Mungiki followers and a planned rally in Kibera on Sunday by the banned sect's former leader, Mr Ndura Waruinge, who has since become a preacher, had a bearing on the planned chaos. The Mathare killings, Mr Kajwang' said, were preceded by the a midnight attack on Kibera residents last month, in which three people were shot dead. "We understand that there will be more killings in Kibera on Sunday," he added. The MPs saw significance in yesterday's demonstration by people calling for the acquittal of Mungiki sect leader Maina Njenga. They recalled that when police commissioner Hussein Ali denied media reports of a gun attack on the minister's home, he was forced to retract his statement. Shortly after the incident, Maj-Gen Ali took the unprecedented step of issuing a statement pointing out that the attack was not aimed at Mr Michuki, even as the minister insisted on television that the gunmen were after him. Said Mr Kajwang': "What Maj-Gen Ali said was the truth - there was no attack on Mr Michuki's home; it was all stage-managed to show he was in danger." The MPs also wanted the Government to explain if Mungiki was, indeed, a "lawless bunch of youths bent on causing mayhem" and why it tolerated their demonstration. Prof Olweny added: "The Government is setting the stage for a the intended plan to assassinate top politicians." Asked if they had reported the matter to police, the MPs said the CID should be able to gather the information. They recalled that a Narc politician had publicly said that Mr Odinga would "face a man" in the elections, referring to Mr Waruinge's interest in vying for bid to contest the Lang'ata seat. Dr Awiti said: "What is emerging seems to be a clear preparation for the assassination of Mr Odinga." He added that the Government was frustrated by the fact that Mr Odinga had united a large number of Kenyans against it. Mr Sunguh said that since the Government had failed to rule effectively, it wanted to create insecurity to cause panic and fear among Kenyans not to back ODM. Mr Kajwang' asked why the raiders on Mr Michuki's home spent more than 40 bullets firing "in the air" when they could easily have targeted the minister. He asked: "If they wanted to kill Mr Michuki, why were they shooting in the air? People shoot the target. "We have information that there is preparation for the foundation for the killing of Raila. They are setting a stage for rampant insecurity to target individuals who have given the Government headaches." The MPs asked President Kibaki to take charge of the security situation in the country before things got out of hand or resign from Government. In January, Mr Odinga who is currently touring the US, recorded a statement with the police, alleging to say that his life was in danger. He said he believed he was being targeted, arguing that unmarked cars had been tailing him to his Karen home in Nairobi. The Mulindwas Communication Group
