railways!!!..could it be that the people stealing rail trucks ( yup that heavy
tonnage of steel) are doing so because of poverty in Uganda brought by Yoweri
Kaguta Museveni's NRM Military dictatorship ...really How can some one begin
to steal a rail track?

UGANDA Railways Corporation has lost 160 kilometres of rail track material
worth Shs58 billion to thieves on the Busoga and Kasese-Kampala line.
Acting URC Chief Executive officer Noel Muhangi told reporters at the Police
headquarters in Kampala last week that most of the stolen tracks end up in
steel rolling mills in Lugazi, Jinja, Mbarara and Iganga.

"The biggest part of the track that has been vandalised is the western
route which has lost 90 kilometres of material and Busoga comes second with
70kms. If you calculate, these are billions of shillings that we have lost," Mr
Muhangi said.

The steel materials are smelted and rolled into products
like steel bars, fake coins, among other products. The reported cases are
mainly on the 333 km Kampala-Kasese line and the 144 km
Jinja-Mbulamuti-Busembatia line. The Kasese line has been disused for more than
a decade.
The other affected routes are the 500 km Tororo-Pakwach and the 250
Kampala-Malaba lines. URC says if this continues, by the end of 2008, they
would have lost track worth Shs173 billion.
Police spokesman Asan Kasingye said a policeman one Turinabwe and a Gombolola
ISO officer Joseph Lukwago from Mityana District are facing charges of rail
track theft.
