December 8, 2007 African Gender Award to General Paul Kagame is an Insult to Women Brussels, Belgium-Houston, Texas - The Intwari Partnership, the United Democratic Forces, UDF-Inkingi and the Party for Democracy in Rwanda, PDR-Ihumure are dismayed to learn that 'Femmes Africa Solidarité (FAS)' will go ahead as planned and give its African Gender Award 2007 to Rwandan President General Paul Kagame during its biennial African Gender Forum in Dakar on December 11, 2007 for "outstanding achievement in encouraging gender parity in politics, for the integration of women in the reconstruction process and the fight against gender-based violence." It is Kagame's RPF army that has widowed several hundred thousands of women in the provinces of Byumba, Kibungo, Ruhengeri, Gisenyi... in a vicious campaign to eliminate all males from teenage and up in this area, where 80% of homes are run by single women. It is General Kagame's war of occupation in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo through such proxy groups as the CNDP of FARDC renegade officer Laurent Nkundabatware and others before him that has taken the lives of more than 200,000 Hutu refugees, mostly women, children and the elderly, and of more than 4 million Congolese civilians. Clearly, there is a mountain of incriminating evidence suggesting that President Kagame is a war criminal only good for prosecution and not for awards and gala parties. Femmes Africa Solidarité (FAS), together with its partners, the Pan-African Center for Gender, Peace and Development, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and others, grossly erred on January 27, 2007 in nominating Kagame for this Award, and are in gross error in proceeding to hand out the Award to him. We had hoped they would carefully weigh the overwhelming criminal evidence against him - and they had a full year to do that - and make the only honourable and moral decision under the circumstances: cancelling the nomination. There are many distinguished men and women of Africa far more deserving of this Award than our war-mongering General who unleashed the Rwandan and Great Lakes region tragedy of the last decade. It is a sad day for Rwandan and African women, and for women everywhere. As much as the Hands Off Cain Award to President Kagame on August 30, 2007 for the abolition of the Death Penalty in Rwanda was a mockery and an insult to millions of victims who have perished at the hands of the RPF brutal army, the African Gender Award to Kagame is equally shameful and an outrage for women victims of the RPF violence, for all of humanity and the civilized world. It is also a spit in the face of all Rwandans painfully struggling under Kagame's RPF tyranny, and when history finally puts Kagame in his right place as one of the most implacable killers of all time, Femmes Africa Solidarité (FAS) will realize the enormity of its self-inflicted black mark and the serious prejudice done against the very cause of gender it is dedicated to promoting.
