Economic Development.
EM,
The two links provide information on both Uganda's import and export. A
country's economic growth depends greatly on export than import.
Uganda's economic backbone is Agriculture. Unfortunately not much investment
is being made in that sector. This sector is almost being abandoned by the
younger generation in favor of opening and operating internet cafes in urban
areas or MPesa (Mobile money centers). While it was expected that the World
Wide Web would leapfrog Africa into the future, that does not seem to be the
case. It has increased Africa's connection to the world, but nearly 70% of
it is being used for "kabozi" or "pokopoko" that adds nothing of value to a
country's economic development and growth. Instead, it is taxing the users
as they can no longer live without cellphones! For Uganda and for that
matter, Africa as whole to move forward, a stronger focus needs to be made
on rural development and encourage migration back to the villages and thus
beginning development from bottom up than top down which has been the case
since colonial departure. Uganda is investing and spending more on foreign
companies that bank most of their money in foreign banks with little being
re-invested in the local economy. Ugandan workers earn less than their
foreign experts employing them the very reason Amin expelled Ugandan Asians
in 1972! Too much going out than being invested inside. Foreign banks earn
interest on money made and earned in Uganda instead of Ugandan banks doing
so.
