Local media in Australia are identifying the suspect in the hostage situation
as a radical Muslim cleric.
The Daily Telegraph reports that Man Haron Monis, also known as Sheik Haron, is
a self-styled preacher of Islamic State on bail for accessory to murder.
The Telegraph reports that police authorised the release of the suspect's name.
The hostage situation started just before 6 p.m. ET Sunday. So far, five
hostages have escaped.

To those following the Sydney hostage taker
Five people have now escaped from a chocolate shop in Sydney, Australia where a
gunman has been holding a number of people hostage. Three captives bolted out
of a fire exit door about six hours after the drama began. A short time later
two more people -- both apparently women who work at the cafe -- made a
successful run for it. The gunman entered the cafe in the heart of Sydney`s
financial and shopping district at the height of the Monday morning rush hour.
