Hello …

I am trying to trace my ancestors on my Mother’s side of our family.

I have traced back to;

James McGHEE (circa 1790 – circa 1870) and Martha KING (1797 – 1873).

* We know that James was a Farmer from Tyrone

* From the Griffith’s Land Valuation compiled in 1858, one our
family members here in Australia has found that James leased his house,
offices (outhouses) and land (approximately 25 acres with an annual
valuation of £16.5s) from a Neal Brown.

* By 1863, James is still recorded, but his land has been reduced to
approximately 20 acres.

* In 1876 he is struck off and replaced by Neal Brown, so we are
fairly sure that he died between 1863 and 1876.

* From the Registrar’s Office Belfast and specifically from the
district of Newtownstewart, Strabane, we’ve found on

* 30 May 1870, a James McGHEE farmer aged 80 years of Brucklafs
married informant Matty X mark McGEE (short for Martha). If this is him, it
makes James is born around 1790.
* 15 May 1873, Martha McGee widow of a farmer of Grange aged 76 (i.e.
born around 1791) informant Robert X KING, Grange.
*       7 April 1884, Robert KING aged 62 (i.e. born around 1822) Army
Pensioner married informant, wife Margaret X (her mark) KING, of Grange.
*       03 March 1910, Margaret KING widow aged 67 (i.e. born around 1843)
domestic servant, informant Margaret ROBINSON.

Joseph McGHEE ( ? - ? ) and Mary HAMILTON ( ? - ? )

* Joseph was the son of James McGHEE (1790 – 1870) and Martha KING
(1797 – 1873)
* He was the brother of Robert McGHEE (1842 – 1921), my Great, Great
Grandfather. We cannot find any other siblings at this stage.
* Joseph married Mary HAMILTON before leaving Tyrone, but it seems
that no children were born to this marriage.
* Their marriage is recorded on 21st June 1860 at the First Meeting
House Presbyterian Church of the Parish of Adstraw in County Tyrone
* Joseph is listed as a Mechanic of Magheracolton on the original
Wedding Certificate.
* Witnesses to the marriage are listed as William JACK and Samuel
WAMSHOLE.
* Joseph left Ireland for Australia between 1869 and 1872.
* He settled in Roma, Queensland Australia, before later moving to
Southport, Gold Coast, Queensland Australia.

* For the Townland of Milltown, we discovered Patrick HAMILTON leased
house, offices and land (approximately 11 acres annual valuation of £4.5s)
from a Eliza Denny.

Any clues, assistance, guidance or referrals that you can provide would be
greatly appreciated.

Warmest regards,

Craig Doyle
