The Route Cattle Show

The Route Farming Society held their annual cattle show in the New-market
yard, Ballymoney, on Friday last. The day was all that could be desired,
and the farmers turned out better than on any former occasion, but the
attendance of the gentry was not so large. Among those present we observed
— Charles O’HARA, Esq, J.P., Captain O’HARA, Jas. CRAMSIE, Esq, Rev. J.R.
PHILLOTT, T. LEATHEM, M.D., J.R. THOMSON, M.D., H. ANDERSON, M.D., P.S.
CAMAC, M.D., Rev. Samuel FINLAY, Archibald MOORE, Esq, Hugh MOORE, Esq,
James HANNA, Esq.; Messrs. M’CORMICK, Robert M’MASTER, J. BOYD, S. BOYD, D.
BOYD, J. KEERS, Wm. KEERS, &c., &c.

There was a decided improvement in the stock exhibited, particularly among
the mixed breeds, showing the usefullness of good shorthorned bulls, of
which Marcus GAGE, Esq, showed a very handsome specimen, of great size,
beautiful symmetry, and good constitution; also, Messrs. J.& J. PINKERTON,
a white bull, which obtained the first prize in his class. The Ayrshires
made a good turn out both in quality and numbers. Some very fine specimens
were exhibited. Mr. Saml. SMYTH showed four for a challenge against Mr. W.
M’AFEE, and was successful, although Mr. M’AFEE, it was thought, could
scarcely be beat. Mr. A. THOMSON, showed an Ayrshire, a very superior
animal, winning in her class, and also beating all the cows in the yard.
Some of the bullocks were very promising for the stall, their early
maturity being quite remarkable. The sheep were altogether first rate. Mr.
GAGE exhibited his splendid sheep that obtained the first prize both at
Belfast and the North-West Society at Strabane. Mr. M’AFEE also exhibited
some excellent sheep. The pigs were very superior. The sow which got the
first prize in Belfast was easily beaten here by Mr. James THOMSON.

In the evening the members and friends sat down to dinner, which was
provided by Mrs. REID, in her usual sumptuous style. The chair was ably
occupied by James CRAMSIE, Esq, and the vice-chair by Mr. Hugh MOORE. After
justice had been done to the various dishes, and the usual loyal toasts
proposed and responded to, the Chairman called on the secretaries to read
