Found a few different utilities online: http://wipe.sourceforge.net/ http://www.kyuzz.org/antirez/overwrite.html http://abaababa.ouvaton.org/wipe/
I can't speak for any of them, but assuming they work as advertised, they seem to be on the right track. The biggest concern when wiping files is that you want to know exactly which blocks on the harddrive contain your file - and then overwrite those blocks repeatedly with pseudorandom data (or just 0x00/0xFF bitmask patterns). You also want to ensure that no copies of the file are left in temp (or cached in RAM or swap). Joe
