i got it to work. but not after some creative hacking. In summary:
- 4.0.4 from OIT didn't work, at least not after the first patch of commenting out two offensive lines - via google finally found a (foreign) university that did have a URL that wasn't restricted. it was also version 4.7.0 - copied the pcf files that i had on my mac to the appropriate (same!) location in linux - applied a simple "comment out 2 lines" to linuxcniapi.c to make this one compile - started the service, ran the "vpnclient connect UMD-Wireless" command (UMD is ok too, but you can't do library stuff like browse in the O'Reilly safarie series) and then i was browsing Safari (no pun intended) under linux, cool. does that mean i'm volunteering to give a VPN talk? well, this should probably be added, in slightly more verbose terms, to our webpage, AND we need to urge OIT to get a more recent version. peter
