Sorry if I left a few of you hanging, I haven't had much time to mess with
the flash card issue this week. Anyway, the following is the new
information I've acquired:
Since I last posted, I attempted to reformat the partition on my flashcard
using mkfs and got the response, "mkfs.vfat: unable to open /dev/sdc1"
(vfat because the card must be formatted FAT 16 in order to work with my
mp3 player), and I tried to repartition the flashcard using fdisk, which
only resulted in the message, "Unable to write /dev/sdc".
I also tried plugging the card reader into an OS X computer and read the
card on there. It also insists that the card is write protected (in the
Disk Utility) and will seemingly not allow me to delete files, reformat,
or repartition.
The only other variable would be the card reader. I used my card reader
on each system, but for right now I don't have access to another card
reader. Someone had suggested that there might be a write protect switch
on the reader. It only has one button, which seems (according to the
documentation) to be for use with some proprietary software for Windows
and Mac OS. I think the idea is that when you hit the button the software
automatically reads what's on the card is does something with the data.
I don't even have the software, and I originally was able to read and
write to the drive without messing with that button. I did press it once
to see what it would do (I think AFTER this problem began, but I'm not
certain), and it caused the system to freeze. Fun. Anyhow, I guess a
useful step now would be to find a system with a different SD card reader
and try that.
I should note that my mp3 player is still able to delete files from the
card; however, I have no way to add new files to the card via the mp3
player. Very frustrating.
Any insights? Anyone have an SD card reader I could try this card on?
