[UM-LINUX] Setting up "vacation"

Anyone know how to set up /usr/bin/vacation on glue?
I did this in my .forward (in my /mail/milgram directory):
\milgram, "|/usr/bin/vacation milgram"

but mail bounces back with this error:
501 5.6.0 Data format error

The HOWTO at 
http://www.helpdesk.umd.edu/topics/email/utilities/vacation/3951/

didn't seem to do it. I noticed that vacation -I doesn't create
a .vacation.db anywhere.

(I have no trouble getting it to work on my non-glue linux boxes, so 
something's different here)
