I haven't seen (m)?any legitimate postings from non-subscribers in a long time, so clearly possible new members are not taking advantage of this openness to the rest of the list's detriment.  I would like to let it remain open, but the amount of spam that gets through degrades the list too much.  If you look at the May archives page, the majority of the top ten emails are spam.

So... what happened to the "business decisions" made in "the past" thar argued that making the list members-only was raising the barrier for entry to new members?

Due to the recent spam coming through the list, I have changed the settings such that only list subscribers may post to the list, so if you want to post make sure you're posting from the email address which the list sends messages to.
