Just to follow up on this:

I bought a no-name USB-parallel adapter cable from computergeeks.com for
$10. Might have some circuitry in the parallel port connector, but who
knows. XP picked it up right away and I set the printer to USB001
(instead of LPT1 or whatever it may have been) and it worked. I think
the network server suggestion is a good one, but now I can get a USB
version so it'll be compatible with the next printer I get (if this
Laserjet ever does give up the ghost).

I think the one I got is a generically packaged Belkin product.
