If you can make your linux drive your primary, it will be a lot easier in the long run.
I currently have linux as my primary drive (also on a Dell motherboard), and Windows on the secondary. Here's the grub magic that makes it all work:

#which listing to boot as default
default 1

#how many seconds to wait before default is booted
timeout 30

title Windows XP
rootnoverify (hd1,0) #Windows is secondary drive, Linux is primary
 makeactive
 chainloader +1
map (hd0) (hd1) # Tell the first hard drive to pretend to be the second
map (hd1) (hd0) # Tell the second hard drive to pretend to be the first

title=Gentoo Linux 2.6.16-r13
root(hd0, 0)
kernel /kernel-2.6.16-gentoo-r13 root=/dev/sda3

I'm about half way through a Gentoo install and Grub is starting to give me headaches.
My problem is that I have 2 hard drives hda is a windows install and hdb is Gentoo and
my BIOS only gives me the option to boot from the primary hard drive (hda).  So I guess
my question is how do I install Grub on hda with out wrecking windows?  Oh and just to
clarify I am POSITIVE that I can only boot from the primary drive (its a stupid old Dell
motherboard that hasnt had its firmware updated in a long time).

Thanks,
