Hey Bernie, I'm a little fuzzy on it since I haven't used shred in >1
year.  But you can use it to shred a whole filesystem by, e.g.:
shred /dev/hda1

That will achieve a similar effect to all the dd if=/dev/urandom stuff
done before, except that you can choose to do multiple passes and it
will figure out all the details for you!  You can get boot disks which
you pop in and they run shred for you automatically... I believe I used
the Linux System Rescue CD (amazingly handy!!!) and that has a copy of
shred on it.
