SPARC, unfortunately, did not have a good Free 64 bit compiler until within the last few years, and many things which built fine with Sun's cc 64 bit did not build correctly with GCC, since it assumed it was 32-bit. Also, several graphics libraries, and therefore both XV and Firefox didn't build properly when I last tried to make 64-bit builds. This is in addition to battling the "SPARC is differently endian from Intel" fight. It might be better now, but I gave up on my desktop being someone else's learning experience. I also gave up on SPARC as my desktop at all, so take all of this with a grain of salt.
