It is very rare for a company to accept college graduates.

I find that an unprofessional and an incorrect comment.  It concerns me.

A company with a good training program will hire graduates.  What is
probably correct is that they do not typically require a recruiting company
to find them.  Furthermore, you should be wise to consider experience on
open source projects as valid experience.  Linux kernel development is
certainly not trivial. Do not ever let one person's opinion diminish your
self worth.
