If you have a mail.umd.edu account, you can use mail.umd.edu as your
SMTP server provided you authenticate with your directory username and
password. [1] I wasn't sure if this would let you send mail from off
campus, but I just tried it and it seems to work (sent mail to my gmail
account through mail.umd.edu from a box an ISP).

I'm not sure if this is by design, though.
