I've looked at Pricewatch but what I've been finding (just looked again) is
that what they have listed as 4GB modules are either 2 x 2GB kits or
FBDIMMs.

The sort of modules I was looking at before were non-ECC, unregistered brand
name modules (e.g., OCZ) for around $100. Among all that stuff there do seem
to be a few stray modules that might be right, but they're generic modules
for $150-$200. The only other thing I've found was a 2 x 4 GB kit of
Kingston memory on Newegg for $420. So basically almost all the brand name
modules have disappeared, and what remains has doubled in price. I'm not
accustomed to either of those phenomena when buying RAM, hence I'm looking
for insight.

Of course, the other option would be a MoBo that takes more than 4 RAM
modules, but it looks to me like that moves you into server boards and
FBDIMMs and out of our price range.
