NX is doing more behind the scenes than just compression, making for a much faster user experience; it reduces the number of roundtrips required to load some programs (e.g. Firefox) by multiple orders of magnitude. The benefits of this might not be as evident to you since you are running this on a 100mb LAN. You might want to also check out Google's new open source NX server: neatx. It's rather new, so the setup is a bit convoluted, but it might offer some advantages over the FreeNX implementation.
