Swap? Definitely!

Yes - use tmpfs.

In general, anything that doesn't need to be kept between boots.
Also, keep in mind that NFS's inefficiency is in round-trips - with a
big pipe, it can easily move a lot of data, but it really bogs down
when asked to move many small pieces of data (e.g,. a filesystem with
a lot of files, or a swapfile being accessed in a random fashion).
