Thanks to everyone who chimed in about my monitor problems.

Today I went to PC Retro (or is it Retro PC?) just off Route 1, near Behnke's, and got a used View Sonic 22 inch monitor with a VGA input. I connected it up, and it's working well.

It did give me an "out of range" (of course it didn't say WHAT was out of range!) message after "Welcome to GRUB" came on the screen, but once Linux started booting things worked fine. So I'm as happy a camper as I've been since I got my current computer. (Main gripe being that video updates glacially--2-3 seconds to switch desktops.) Someday I'll get one that works better, but it's adequate for my needs now.

The only heavy-duty work I do on the computer is editing WAV files.

I also asked the folks at PC Retro about setting up a laptop for my mom with KPPP working on it. They said they'd as their tech folks and let me know. She'll have her 94th (!) birthday near the end of the month, and she's said she'd like to get on the Internet to look for recipes. I know she'd also enjoy chatting with her nieces, all of whom have email. So she can share the same dial up acct. I have, and with a laptop she can sit in her easy chair in the living room and surf away. I should have asked them about this long ago.

So thanks again to everyone. I really appreciate it.

Howard
