Friends,

Sorry for the long break in communication. But I had to travel but now I am back.
It turns ou that the trouble that looked like an issue with the Intel driver was nothing of the sort. I had this problem with 4.1 and it is still with me with 4.2b.

If I use the dos boot cd then the installation on a toshiba a40 notebook runs all the way to the end, no problems. BUT if I use the 4.2b linux boot CD I get about 10 file read errors starting at around 92% of the installation and the only way for the install to finnish is to skip the files.

I have found that the setup tries finding the following files

2SW, 5SW, DUAL, WHEEL, SE, W2K_XP, SYS (4x)
looking at the logfiles on the samba server the following entries were being searched for: (just doing a "grep" for the filenames "2sw\." in the samba logs)

2SW

and similar entries for DUAL, WHEEL, SE, W2K_XP, and SYS

When I searched the server dir I found that the oemdrv dir was missing the "dat" subdir so I thought just adding it would "solve" the problem. But two things stand against this.

1. the error only ever shows up when using the linuxboot disk and not when using the
dos boot disk.
2. even with the files now in place the linux boot disk still complains as follows.

The error message now looks as follows:

Can anybody explain what is going on? The dirs are really there now. So the two questions are, why is there a difference between the dos unattended cd and the linux unattended cd and why does it fail when using the linux one even if the dirs are there?

Many thanks for any answers (or even suggestions for further tests)

I guess my question at this time is, what if anything can I do to
try finding out what goes wrong when loading the dos ndis e100b.dos
driver?

This may be a bad interaction with FreeDOS EMM386. (I was wrong to
make it the default based on so little testing.) Try editing
config.sys to switch back to using umbpci.sys instead. Or download
unattended-4.1b-test2 from
<http://unattended.sourceforge.net/testing/>, which already has this
reverted.

Assuming here that the questions about the linux related problems
will take much longer to sort as that boot method hasn't had enought
testing in this project.

Actually, most people are having pretty good experiences with the
Linux boot disk. Could you try a couple of things for me?

First, when it hangs, press "Alt-F2" (to switch to virtual console 2)
and then try "ls /z". You can press Alt-F1 to get back to your
original virtual terminal, not that it will help any.

Also, please try disabling Linux's ACPI support, which seems to be
troublesome on some laptops. Hold down the shift key while booting
the CD, and then type "unattended acpi=off" at the boot: prompt.

Thanks!
