Ok, this is a bit of a premature announcement, but since it came up...
My team is working on an open source alternative to SUS. That is, an open source client/server package that will automatically download Windows updates from Microsoft and allow clients to pull those updates from the server.
If these are the only requirements then it seems squid does a VERY good job of this already. If you need to FILTER the hotfixes / updates then squid may or may not work in your situation. I have never downloaded a
ms update twice, its cached locally after the 1st workstation downloads it, even months later another workstation just pulls that same update from
the squid cache. In my case it's a squid transparent cache so the client isn't even aware that it is using squid....
That's a very good, clean, and simple solution for locally caching updates. We're wanting to do more than that, though.
The idea is really to provide a platform-independent offering that is competitive to SUS, which contains a server that tells Windows clients what updates are available to them (including a mechanism to approve or omit updates and specify certain other parameter related to updates). Additionally, we intend to ultimately have a solution that will allow third-party applications or updates as well.
Will you be attempting to use the MS Windows Update v4 (5?) ActiveX Control or will you have your own solution to pick/install updates on the client side?
At this time, we aren't optimistic about ever being able to use MS Windows Update on the client-side to pull updates from our server. We'll be considering that after we get an initial release out the door, but for now there will simply be a client-side program (it started out in Perl, but it's being rewritten in C++) of our own creation that will pull the updates from in-network server.
Something that could be used transparently to filter the updates would be $
Specifically, what kind of filtering capability are you looking for?
