Hi John,
Serial console support is built in to linux, all you need to do is turn it on. It's not very involved, just a few changes to config files in /etc. Here are links to a few pages explaining the process:
http://www.znark.com/tech/serialconsole.html
http://www.vanemery.com/Linux/Serial/serial-console.html
Basically you need to add this line into /etc/inittab: s0:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty ttyS0 115200,9600 linux but check those pages for more details.

A couple of days ago, I posted a message about how you can get a serial console with the unattended linux boot CD. But I made a boot disk by following the instructions at http://unattended.sourceforge.net/advanced.php and it will not give me a serial console.
I did not make any modifications to the files in the bootdisk sub-dir before making the boot CD. This is because I suspected there was a problem with the serial console before I began. We had a bunch of boot CDs around here that were made in version 4.5. They had modifications and none of them would allow me to create a serial console. But the original boot CD worked.
So I downloaded 4.6, and built a fresh boot CD. And, sure enough, it won't give me a serial console.
Any advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated. I'm blind and I'm in a new job. And I'd really like to make a good impression. What I may try is to copy the files from the boot CD that works into the space for building a boot CD. Then try again to build a boot CD. Then I'll be able to make the modifications I need to the isolinux.cfg file.
PS: Are the developers on this list?
