Helping hungry children - Argentina
FOR THE KIDS
Did you know you can donate free food to an Argentine child from any
place in the world with just a click? In 1999, five friends in different
professional areas started thinking about how to fulfill their common
hope: to eradicate extreme hunger for children in Argentina. In 2001,
with Argentina slumped in a social, economic and political crisis, Por
los Chicos (which translates into For the Kids in English) was
launched. The 5 founding members all dedicated their time and energy free of
charge in order to make a common vision come true.
Por los Chicos is a non-profit organization committed to feeding hungry
children.
How does it work? Each time you visit www.porloschicos.com , you are
donating a free meal.
In other words, every click counts in the life of a hungry kid.
Porloschicos.com functions thanks to the power of publicity and the Internet.
With every click, the server automatically registers your donation, and
all the costs are entirely covered by the sponsors. Advertising fees
for the banner ads on the site pay for the services, and 100% of each
contribution turns into food. At the end of the month, Por los Chicos
delivers the donated food to different childrens food kitchens in
Argentina.
"Maximizing transparency is essential," says Toms Fourcade, a 26 year
old industrial engineer born in Argentina. He is one of the five
founders who launched the project, which today is supported by 60 volunteers.
Everybody has to know the destination for his donation - That is the
reason why the web site shows the amount of food funded and the
kitchens assisted. All sponsors and suppliers' payments are done by traceable
wire transfers. Operational costs are covered by donors who earmark
their donations for supplies and services. We expect everybody involved in
Porloschicos.com to benefit from their work. Kids get fed, the sponsors
get advertising space, and the donors find out how to contribute in
fighting against extreme poverty.
Volunteers who are involved develop useful life and job skills. In
return, they get not only personal fulfillment but also professional
experience. That is the reason why most of the volunteers are recent
graduates who are working for the first time on press, programming, accounting
and design tasks.
Por los Chicos has also given its founders the opportunity to face new
challenges. According to Fourcade: "The project is based on innovative
models and takes advantage of new technologies. Monthly, an average of
550,000 visitors make virtual donations, 40% of whom come from abroad.
90% of communication among the project team is through the internet, in
the form of wire transfers for payments, as well as banners available
to be inserted in the signature block of donors outgoing emails or on
their own personal web sites.
Today, eighteen months after its official launch, Porloschicos.com has
provided a total of over one and a half million food plates for hungry
kids. Its five founders are scattered around different countries and
although not much older than the mouths they feed, they are continuously
looking for new and better ways to improve upon their goals of
eradicating hunger in Argentina.
