Similarly, in pinyin transliteration of Chinese, the apostrophe (and this really is an 
apostrophe)
is used to divide syllables that may otherwise be incorrectly interpretted.

Thus Yan'an ���� and Yanan �R��; Xi'an ���� and xian ��.
