It is always a challenge to describe technology in terms that the lay person can understand.
I like to say, "Unicode and ISO/IEC 10646 describe a single standard for representing the world's characters in computers as a series of numbers (zeros and ones)."
Indeed. But the layman knows what a font is, and an alphabet. "Characters" has to come in the sentence after. ;-)
