I have good news for your student. If she types or pastes a Russian word into Google using Unicode, Google finds matches not just in Unicode encoded pages, but also in ones encoded in other Cyrillic encodings e.g. Windows-1251 - and even when this doesn't seem to be explicit in the page source. Google is clever - and international.
