In the 1960s, an intrepid French Jewish studies
scholar, Gerard Weil, computerized one Hebrew Bible
manuscript---the Leningrad Codex---for the first time.
Since his time, as far as I know, Leningrad has been
re-encoded 7 times....each encoding is different...
I'm not making this up, I really wish I were....
What they did differently was partly the 'accents' as
Unicode calls them. But in addition, people 'read'
Leningrad differently...Leningrad is in pretty good
shape, I think, but it has brown spots, faded letters,
partially erased letters, places where the scribe (who
as excellent) made an occasional obvious error, and so
forth.
So people who really know this stuff--Aron Dotan, Kirk
Lowery, Prof. Kaufman, Alan Groves, etc.---can all
quote these variations at great length to people such
as myself, who learned to read Hebrew with *their*
edited text using a really heavy square script font in
a fancy paper book.
Recently Kirk Lowery decided to make a completely
un-edited version of Leningrad.....so we'll see--Elaine
