        Then that other process is not Unicode conformant.  If you must deal with such nonconformant (or "fragile") processes, you may find that you need to store your Unicode data as binary.  But that should only be done if there is absolutely no way to replace the fragile piece with a conformant one, as there are many potential problems and obstacles in doing so.
