Which kind of implications do you refer to? The proposed variation sequences simply provide a more general access to typographic details, which now can be accomplished by more complicated means like implementing locale-specific glyph selection within a font, and relying on a higher-level protocol supplying the correct locale information. (Anyway, such means may stay in effect in parallel to the use of variation sequences.) One of the advantages of variation sequences is that the glyph selection is transparent to the user, instead of to be implemented in each font in a non-standardized way. - Karl Pentzlin
