Extremely common in lots of documents and publications. Without any doubts. Such dingbat is not very exceptional, not even by its form. Usage may vary between an abreviating notation (in a document-specific convention explained elsewhere in the document), or a custom bullet for separating or introducing items in lists, or a mark calling a footer note or side note. It may also just mean a check mark in a choices list, on preprinted commercial forms to complete. Or in tabular comparison charts.
